Upper Mustang Trek - 17 Days

The Upper Mustang trek following through off-the-beaten path in the spectacular Trans-Himalayan Region with Tibetan cultural influences reaches into Lo-Mangthang- a walled city and the capital of Upper Mustang at the top of the Kaligandaki River. The Mustang Region which is also known as the Last Forbidden Kingdom is considered as one of the most interesting places in Nepal. The Upper Mustang region hidden behind the majestic Himalaya ranges is full of some of Nepal's oldest Buddhist Monasteries, ancient villages, and inaccessible caves. In addition, the undulating trail passing through the world's deepest Kaligandaki gorge region in the company of panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and several other peaks helps you explore the centuries old isolated culture, lifestyle and heritage prevailed in the region.

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu (1300m)
On arrival in Kathmandu, you will be greeted by our airport representative. After the completion of immigration formalities, you will be transferred to your hotel. Depending on your choice, you can either visit our office site where you can meet your trekking guide or stroll around the streets of Thamel - a tourist hub in Kathmandu. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Trek Preparation
Today you will engage on upcoming trip preparation with your trek members. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 3
6 Hours

Kathmandu - Pokhara Drive: 5 - 6 hrs
The morning scenic bus drive departs for one of the popular and natural landmarks of Nepal – the lake city of Pokhara. The journey will be accompanied by greeneries and mid hill villages in between. Apart from tremendous lakes, Pokhara is also popular for trekking junction as the lake city unfolds different trekking routes in the Annapurna region. In Pokhara you make a short sightseeing tour of famous landmarks of Pokhara with your guide. Overnight in Pokhara.

Day 4
4 Hours

Pokhara - Jomsom Flight & Jomsom - Kagbeni Trek (2,800m): 3 - 4 hrs
The early morning scenic flight over the mountains with the views of 8,000ers such as Annapurna and Dhaulagiri brings you at Jomsom – the administrative center of Mustang district.
After landing at Jomsom, the real trek begins. Passing through the trail of Kaligandaki valley, the trekking route connects you with Lubra where you visit at Bon-Po monastery. The next section of the trail links you with Eklebatti from where you will be connected with Kagbeni - Kagbeni is an interesting windswept village situated on the main age old Trans-Himalayan salt trade route to Tibet. Kagbeni is famous for 1000 years old the red-painted Gompa. Overnight at Kagbeni.

Day 5
6 Hours

Kagbeni - Chele (3,050m): 5 - 6 hrs
Your trek today initially follows the sandy and windy trail in the company of picturesque places on the route. The forth coming undulating trail at first brings you at Tangbe village passing through a narrow track. In between, you can enjoy the views of white washed houses, fields of buckwheat, barley, wheat and apple orchards on the trail. The next section of the trail reaches at Chhusang and from where you move forth to cross a river and the journey arrives at small ridges to connect you with Chele village. Overnight at Chele.

Day 6
7 Hours

Chele - Syanbochen (3,475m): 6 - 7 hrs
This section of the trip at first brings you at Eklo Bhatti and then moves ahead enjoying the views of Tilicho Peak, Yakawa Kang and Damodar Danda to get you at Taklam La Pass (3,624m). Secondly the trail slightly descends down to bring you at Samar Village from where you will follow an upward trail to reach at a ridge. Next the trail descends down to a stream from where around three hours’ trek brings you at Syanbochen.  In between the trail you pass by a cave popularly recognized as Ramchung Cave and the journey will be accompanied by the cool streams and juniper trees on the route. Overnight at Syanbochen.

Day 7
6 Hours

 Syanbochen - Ghaymi (3,520m): 5 - 6 hrs
The uphill journey today at first passing through a few teahouses, Chortens and local villages with Tibetan style houses reaches at the Yamda La Pass (3,850m). Upon crossing the pass, the trail follows through barley fields till to climb Nyi Pass (4,010m).  From Nyi Pass, you will descend down to Ghaymi - the third largest village in the region which is surrounded by large barren fields. Day 8

Ghaymi - Charang (3,500m): 4 - 5 hrs
The pleasant trek today at first crosses Ghaymi Khola, and then the trail climbs to a plateau where you can see a very long sacred Mani Wall. After crossing the stone Mani Wall, the trail leaves for Charang Village. Your journey in between will be accompanied by the houses separated by stone walls, willow trees, and maize fields. Besides, Charang village welcomes with a huge white dzong and red Gompa and few teahouses. Overnight at Charang.

Day 9
6 Hours

Charang - Lo-Mangthang (3700m): 5 - 6 hrs
In the company of a superb view of Nilgiri, Tilicho, Annapurna I and Bhrikuti peak the trail first descends to Charang Chu Canyon and then it climbs steeply after crossing the river. On the trail ahead, you come across a windy pass from where you can see the Lo-Mangthang Valley. While descending from the pass you will have bigger picture of Lo-Mangthang - the ancient walled city of Mustang on the Tibetan Border. Overnight at Lo-Mangthang.

Day 10

Exploring Lo-Mangthang
It will be the day to explore the famous landmarks of Lo-Mangthang. Lo-Manthang was the walled capital of the Kingdom of Lo since its founding in 1380 where you can observe many of the still-standing structures of the ancient city. The northern part of the wall city culturally and linguistically resembles with Tibetan and it occupies two-thirds of Mustang District. Whereas the southern part of the ancient city is inhabited by Thakali people who have different language and culture than the northern dwellers. At first, you will visit to Namgyal Gompa situated on a hilltop. The Gompa serves as an important monastery as well as a local court for the local community. Then you will walk for Tingkhar - the last main village to the northwest of Lo-Mangthang. Alternatively, you can also roam around the primary attractions of the walled city and these include the Tall Champa Lakhang "God house", the red Thugchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa, the Entrance Hall, and the four- storey building of the Raja's palace. The exploration tour within the ancient Kingdom will be accompanied with the surrounding panoramic views of the Himalaya. Overnight at Lo-Manthang.

Day 11
7 Hours

Lo-Mangthang - Drakmar (3,810m): 6 - 7 hrs
After exploring the apex of the trip, the adventure trek through the off-the-beaten path moves for overnight at Drakmar. In between the trail you pass through a more than 1200 years old Ghar Gompa with Guru Rinpoche as the crucial figure. The Gompa is also well recognized for its rock paintings. Overnight at Drakmar.

Day 12
6 Hours

  Dhakmar - Ghiling (3,806m): 5 - 6 hrs
The trail today paves the way towards Ghiling for overnight stay. Around six hours of trek brings you at Ghiling where you can explore the surrounding area. To avoid the dusty and windy trail, you stroll around the area in the evening time. Overnight at Ghiling.

Day 13
6 Hours

Ghiling - Chhuksang (3,050m): 5 - 6 hrs
The mountain trek today while heading for overnight stay at Chhuksang passes through wonderful scenery of the surrounding Himalayas. Overnight at Chhuksang.

Day 14
7 Hours

Chhuksang - Jomsom (2,700m): 6 - 7 hrs
Walking in the mountain trails of remote Himalayas comes to end today. The trip upon reaching at Kagbeni, you will say goodbye to Upper Mustang trail and then you will join with the popular Annapurna Circuit Trekking trail. From Kagbeni following through the Annapurna Circuit Trail you reach at Jomsom. Overnight at Jomsom.

Day 15

Jomsom – Pokhara Flight
Around 30 minutes’ scenic flight between the gorge of two huge mountains Annapurna and Dhaulagiri brings you back in Pokhara – the city of Lakes. Upon your arrival in Pokhara airport you will be transferred at your hotel at one of the most beautiful areas of Pokhara, Lakeside. Rest of the day you can stroll around the streets of Lakeside – the tourist hub in Pokhara. You can even enjoy the view of serene Phewa Lake. Overnight in Pokhara.

Day 16
6 Hours

Pokhara to Kathmandu: 5 - 6 hrs Drive
This will be another interesting bus journey in which you can enjoy scenic greeneries, rivers, villages, farms, and mountain views. The scenic drive eventually lands you in Kathmandu. In Kathmandu you will be taken to your hotel where you can take rest or may stroll around the streets of Thamel for souvenir shopping or may explore around popular tourist attractions nearby Thamel. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 17

Departure from Nepal
The unrivaled trek in the Upper Mustang region of Nepal Himalayas comes to end today. Since, before 3 hours of scheduled flight our representatives will take you to the airport. On your way to home, we hope, you will have plenty of time to plan your next adventure trip in the Himalayas. Or you can extend your Nepal stay for few more days.

    The date on which the request to cancel is received by the Company will determine the cancellation charge applicable. The cancellation fees excluding insurance are expressed hereafter:

    • 60 days or more before departure      : Loss of deposit
    • 59-21 days before departure               : 50% of cost of services booked
    • Less than 21 days before departure  : 100% of cost of services book

    Your refund request will be answered and processed as soon as possible. If you do not receive the reply within 24 hours, please call the office immediately. Payment will be done via any means preferred by you.
